Takocho is a historic, family-run oden restaurant in Miyagawasuji, Higashiyama, Kyoto.
Run by a husband and wife, the Michelin-recommended restaurant is small, with seats for only about 10 people around the bar.
Note: the owner does not speak much English, and the menu is posted in Japanese only. Additionally, there are no prices visible on the menu.
Based on our experience and what I saw in others’ Google reviews, it seems like each dish is approximately ¥1000.

We ordered konnyaku (蒟蒻), tuna (鮪), ganmodoki (雁擬き), daikon radish (大根), egg (卵), and a cabbage roll (ロールキャベツ). _Each plate was served with a spicy mustard (I love) and a green onion salad._

We ordered a mochi kinchaku (餅巾着).

We also ordered yuba (湯葉), alongside another round of egg, daikon, and the tofu pouch.

We ordered tako (蛸) (twice, actually).

Simon tried the whale tongue (さえずり), which he described as having a fatty, melt-in-your-mouth texture.

We topped off our meal with a fig mochi (無花果餅).
Overall, the meal was expensive, but it was the best oden I’ve ever had.
The overall experience was also really good. The atmosphere reminded us of a TV show we’d seen called [Midnight Diner]()—it felt like many of the restaurant patrons were local regulars who came to chat with each other and the chef/his wife.
