#attraction #city/kansai/uji Taihoan is Uji's municipal tea ceremony house, so we started our day by experiencing a tea ceremony in a traditional Sukiya-zukuri tearoom. We were presented with a tasty, floral wagashi to consume as the matcha was being prepared. One instructor silently performed the ceremony, and another instructor provided some context in English. The main thing I learned during the workshop was that when the tea is given to the guest, the bowl is positioned so that the guest experiences the most visually appealing vantage point of the tea cup. Then before drinking the tea, the guest must hold their left hand under the tea cup, and use their right hand to rotate the cup clockwise twice (approximately 45 degrees in total) so that they aren't drinking directly from the most visually appealing part of the tea cup.
